Cowpokes Vinegar Pie

Directions:
* original instructions said to use butter about the size of an egg.
Combine all ingredients thoroughly. Cook until thick and pour into
prepared crust. Then brown in oven.
At the ranch headquarters there might be eight or ten or a dozen
hungry hired hands for supper every night, and some kind of sweet was a
must. Fresh fruit was almost never available and canned fruit only
occasionally, but pies were no problem for the ranch owners wife or the
ranch foremans wife who was often cook at the headquarters. For always
available were eggs, milk, molasses, vinegar and butter and lard.
Therefore vinegar pie was an old favorite. Ace Reid's Cowpokes
