In 1982, researchers at KSU were able to validate this folk remedy by showing that bay leaves repel cockroaches in insect tanks. The active ingredient in the leaves is cineaole (aka eucalyptol). A bay leaf in your flour canister should keep it free of bugs.
Keep bay leaves out of the reach of children and pets. If swallowed, whole leaves or leaves broken in pieces may block an airway or obstruct the intestines.
