Author/Submitted by: Connie Dobrowolski
Servings: 4
Categories: Cakes / Chocolate / Desserts

Ingredients:
2  cups  sugar
3/4  cup  shortening, or 1/2 cup butter
2    eggs
1  cup  milk, sour (* see directions)
1  teaspoon  vanilla
2 1/2  cups  flour
1/2  cup  cocoa
2  teaspoons  baking soda
1  teaspoon  salt
1  cup  boiling water
    red food coloring, see notes

Directions:
1. Cream shortening and sugar together. Add unbeaten eggs, one at a time; beat well after each addition. Add vanilla to milk. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Alternately add 1/4 of the flour mixture, then 1/3 of the milk mixture to creamed mixture. Continue until all is combined. Add boiling water all at once and stir until well combined.

2. Place in a 9x13" sheet pan or three 8" layer pans. Bake sheet cake at 325 degrees about 1 hour, layers at 350 degrees about 30 minutes. Frost as desired.

3. * If you don't have any sour milk on hand, measure the milk and add 1 capful of vinegar and let it stand. This will make the milk sour but you will not taste it in the cake.

4.

Red food coloring was not included in the recipe, but a couple of drops are probably needed to make the cake red.
