Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies (betty Becknell)

Ingredients:
1 1/4  c  Butter
3/4  c  Packed brown sugar
1/2  c  Sugar
1    Egg
1  t  Vanilla
1 1/2  c  Flour
1  t  Soda
1  t  Salt (optional)
1  t  Cinnamon (optional)
1/4  ts  Nutmeg (optional)
3  c  Oats (regular or quick
    Cooking)
1  c  Raisins or chocolate chips
    Or nuts (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and raisins or chocolate chips. Add to butter mixture, mixing well. Stir in oats. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8-9 minutes for a chewy cookie, 10-11 minutes for a crisp cookie. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire cooling rack. Store in tightly covered container. 4 1/2 dozen We use 1 c chopped nuts sometimes, and sometimes raisins.
