Molasses Cookies A.k.a. Ginger Cookies (christmas)

Ingredients:
1  cup  Brown Sugar
1  cup  Shortening
1  cup  Molasses, (green label)
1    Egg, beaten
1  tsp  Baking Soda, in
1/2  cup  Hot Water
1/2  tsp  Cloves, * see note
1  tsp  Nutmeg, * see note
1  tsp  Cinnamon
1  tsp  Ginger, * see note
7  cups  Unsifted Flour, ** see note
1/2  tsp  Salt

Directions:
Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, then molasses and beaten egg. Combine baking soda and hot water; add to the first mixture. Sift together flour, salt, and spices. (May want to sift several times until well blended.) Stir in dry ingredients, and blend thoroughly. Chill in refrigerator for several hours. Roll out on a well-floured board. (Add more flour if dough is too soft.) Cut into figures. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
